Last night Glad and I attended The Secret Fall of Constance Wilde at the Guthrie. The creativity of the Guthrie production is great! The story of the wife of playwright Oscar Wilde set in Europe in the late 19th Century introduces some very contemporary themes and issues. Although Constance and Oscar married, he engaged in a life-long relationship with his homosexual lover, Bosie. The play reveals the joy and pain of the marriage as Constance shapes her life and the life of their two sons around the sexual preferences of her husband. This play is her story, as the title would suggest; and the struggle is her struggle to find meaning and depth in the ambivalence of her relationships.
We really liked the play, but the run ends July 11 so there's not much time to catch it. Also, the new Guthrie theater is wonderful [this is the third play we've seen there] and the cookies during intermission are delicious.
